Cecil Cotten, 1945-2008

Submitted by Chas Kit on April 10, 2008 - 12:15am. I'm very sad to report that Cecil Cotten passed away on Friday, April 4, in Winnsboro, TX, at the age of 62.

Cecil was lead singer of the Briks, one of the great bands to come out of Dallas in the 1960s. He composed
the lyrics for many of their songs, including Foolish Baby, It's Your
Choice, and Can You See Me. His singing on It's Your Choice shows a
maturity that no other vocal from the era matches, and he was only
about 20 years old at the time.

When the Briks broke up, Cecil played for a short time in Texas with
three members of the Chessmen: Jimmie Vaughn, Tommy Carter and Billy
Etheridge, plus Sammy Piazza on drums. They were managed by Jimmy
Rabbit and recorded some songs at Robin Hood Brians studio in Tyler
which have never been released.

In 1969 he moved to San Francisco and started Benny, Cecil & the
Snakes with Benny Roe, Keith Ferguson, Steve Karnavas and Steve Davis.
The Snakes played house parties for the publishers of Zap Comix, the
Rip Off Press.

In recent years Cecil and former Briks bandmate Mike Neal recorded a CD of blues-inspired songs as The Pickin' Cotten Band.

It's one of my great regrets that I never met Cecil, and his music will always mean a great deal to me.

"I Love Music"

I LOVE MUSIC!!!!!
LOVE TO WRITE IT, RECORD IT, PLAY IT AND SING IT. I HAVE BEEN PLAYING MUSIC SINCE THE MIDDLE 60, S. A PART OF THE BRITISH INVASION I HAVE PLAYED ALL OVER. FROM TEXAS TO CALIFORNIA (L.A. &SAN FRAN) I HAVE OPENED FOR SOME GREATS. FROM MY FIRST TASTE OF PERFORMING, WHICH WAS IN THE FIRST GRADE TALENT SHOW DOING “SECRET LOVE” (ACCAPELLO) BY DORIS DAY TO OPENING FOR BOZ SKAGGS, HOT TUNA AND OTHER WELL KNOWN BANDS IN SAN FRANCISCO IN THE EARLY 70’S, I AM OBVIOUSLY HOOKED. ALL MY SONGS ARE TRUE STORIES AND TELL THE STORIES IN AN UNDERSTANDABLE WAY. MY MATERIAL STARTS IN STUDIO C WHICH IS IN MY WORKSHOP.
ALL MY SONGS ARE RECORDED IN FT. WORTH, TEXAS AT DEEP WELL SOUNDS. OWNED BY MIKE NEAL, FRIEND AND CO -MUSICIAN A GENIUS, WHEN IT COMES TO RECORDING. AND MUSIC IN GENERAL. I WRITE 99% OF OUR MATERIAL. I CREATE GREAT SING A-LONG MELODIES AND HOOKS THAT WILL HAVE YOU SINGING OR TAPPING YOUR FOOT ON THE FLOOR (SOME LISTENERS SAY THEY HAD AN URGE TO GET UP AND JUMP AROUND TO THE BEAT). AND THEY ARE VERY COA Top Shuffle !
The first thing that struck was the very original use of the intro vibrato guitar to actually set up the rhythm for the song !..You guys are really cool ,and ply superbly together !...Excellent vocalist, fine lyrics, tight-as rhythm section, fine guitarist and cool harp playing !...This is super !...Top Marks !

Solid Blues Rocker!
I liked this song a lot. The synchronized vibrato on the guitar is very cool, as is the guitar tone after the vibrato part. I like it when guitarists change voicing, it adds interest and dimensionality to the song. This song sounds a bit like ZZ Top to me, which isn't a bad thing by any means. The intro is a bit on the long side and the overall volume is a bit low, but other than those couple of minor points, this is a really well-done blues rock song done in a traditional vein but with some tasteful updating. I should mention that although it doesn't affect the song per se, it took a loooong time for the file to load even at the low-bitrate setting. I'm giving extra credit for guitars, beat, and male vocals. Rock on!
